【Background and Summary】
Even with the recent global spread of cashless payments, in Japan, cashless payments only made up 20% of all payments in 2016, relatively low compared to other countries. This has pushed the government to undertake various initiatives*2 in order to raise this to approximately 40% by 2025. Under such an environment, Japan's banks and other financial institutions are exploring new business opportunities with the aim of further promoting the use of cashless payments.
In order to support the cashless use of such financial institution, GMO-PG provides a platform system of "Ginko Pay" that allows immediate direct debits from a smartphone app in conjunction with a bank account, and is being introduced or planned to be introduced in the following financial institution (see "About Ginko Pay").
GMO-PG has decided to provide the Ginko Pay platform system to Hokuriku Bank. Hokuriku Bank plans to develop its own smartphone-based payment service "Hokuhoku Pay" utilizing the Ginko Pay platform system in the first half of FY2019 (April ~ September). As announced separately today, the Ginko Pay platform system will also be newly provided to the Bank of Hokkaido (reference URL: https://corp.gmo-pg.com/newsroom/press/gmo-paymentgateway/2019/0208-02.html).
*2 From the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry "Cashless Vision" announced in April 2018. The definition and ratio of cashless payment are based on the announcement.
